Big Country

Woah.. No posts from Maren lately... You alive Maren!?
Meeebe not... Hers are better then mine, COME BACK!

Anyways... I was going to do a post on, um.. Right, Big Country! My favorite band.

Here comes the slightly boring part!
Prepare yourselves...
Big Country to me is the greatest band of all time. Coming out with album after album and even doing the sound track to a movie! Though also doing a few um, slightly silly things. Thank you record companies! For screwing my songs over!

Stuart Adamson (singer and partial guitarist) was born April 11th, 1955 and committed suicide in Hawaii due to drugs and depression on December 16th, 2001. WHY STUART!!! (I'd use a quote from Stuart little but i'm drawing a blank...).

They're first album "The Crossing" (even though the actual song "The crossing" didn't make the album, odd...) was wonderful and hosted many of their most famous songs. Later on in life Stuart Adamson moved to America from Scotland. Afterwards they kept putting out albums, like "Peace in Our Time." Though his looks changed a bit and he sounded less and less Scottish each year, the music stays amazing.

Even Maren likes some of their songs!!! Which kind of amazes me...
Anyways. If you like Scottish rock or have any good taste in music, listen to big country.

Restless Natives

I doubt most of the people reading this have ever heard of it, but i would like to write about it anyways.

Restless Natives: Made in 1985 in Scotland. A film about two young Scots trying to get money. One of them "Ronny" owns a "Jokes, magic and souvenirs" shop, that doesn't bring in too much money. At one point in the movie he gets beat down by an old woman that was angry about her "wee Angus" buying tricks there.

Anyways... In the movie Ronny and Will dress up as (in order) The Clown and The Wolfman and hold up tour buses. Stealing valuables and money from tourists. Their first bad encounter on the bus was with a bloody American
that wanted to keep his money. The American and Will get in a fight and Ronny blows the puffer (the puffer is this thing filled with different powders that make people sneeze and itch). Getting off the bus Will finds the tour guide laughing and looking extremely happy (a girl about his age). The next day they hold up the same bus, and after arguing with Ronny Will goes back to hand the girl flowers.

Later on in the movie Ronny runs into some problems with his life. One thing he says quite a bit it: "I'm on my own, i don't have the support of the family unit to back me up." He goes to a bar and meets up with a friend, unfortunately his friends friend comes along and screws things up. He introduces Ronny to the concept of having a real gun, along with drinking a lot and doing whatever the hell you want. This causes an issue between Ronny and Will, they look at things differently, but in the end they work it out.

Sorry if I'm starting to sound boring. But i wont give too much away. This movie is a wonderful comedy, romance, and even a bit of action. With my favorite band Big Country doing the sound track, the movie couldn't get any better.

13 Little Blue Envelopes, by Maureen Johnson

Hello there, kittens!

Introducing The Best Beach Book For The Month Of June!
Hope you like it, and just so you know, this might be a bit of a long post ;)

What the book says: Here’s the deal: Aunt Peg, the New York artist and the person Ginny Blackstone depended on to make her life interesting, took off to Europe without a word three years ago. Aside from a few postcards, Ginny hasn’t heard much. Then she gets a horrible phone call that changes everything.

But the story is only beginning. Soon after, Ginny receives one little blue envelope from Aunt Peg containing a thousand dollars and some very strange instructions…

Rule #1. You may only bring what fits in your backpack. Dont try and fake it out with a purse or a carry on.

Rule #2. You may not bring guidebooks, phrase books, or any kind of foreign language aid. And no journals.

Rule #3. You cannot bring any kind of extra money, or credit/debit cards, travelers checks, ect. I'll take care of all that.

Rule #4. No electronic crutches. This means, no laptop, no cell phone, no music, and no camera. You can't call home or communicate with people in the U.S. by internet or telephone. Postcards and letters are acceptable and encouraged.

And with that, she is sent off to pick up a package containing twelve similar envelopes, which she can open one by one, as instructed. Each letter contains a task that Ginny must perform.

Soon, the mild-mannered and quiet Ginny (who’s barely made it out of New Jersey before) finds herself running from London to Paris to Rome, and beyond. Along the way, she collects a number of new friends, including: a manager from Harrods department store who runs errands for the rich and famous, a handsome but maddening thief-turned-playwright, a celebrity painter who tattoos the names of her pets on her body, and the angriest vegetable salesman in all of France.

As time goes on, Ginny realizes that her aunt has sent her on a mission, and that there is something big waiting for her in the thirteenth envelope. All she has to do is make it from place to place and complete all of the tasks that have been set before her.

As if life is that easy.

What I say: This book is incredible! Its fabulously well-written (all of Maureen Johnson's books are, I strongly recommend her as a author), and Johnson keeps you guessing all through the book, as to what the next letter will say, as to how Ginny will react, as to how the relationships throughout the book will fall into place, its all very very intriguing and sweet.
Of course, there are the regular mishaps, but this seems to make Ginny more realistic and easier to relate to, and of course, there is a romance in this book! (What would a Beach Read be without a romantic fling!?) ANYWAY, before you head off for tans and salt and waves, be sure to drop by the library and pick up a copy, you will never forgive yourself if you dont! (and I will never forgive you either....)

Love,
M.

Archers Of Loaf

Thank you for the intoduction Mar!
For future reference... My last name is McKinney. GO IRISH!!!

I guess since I am your friend with the good taste in music I will start out with one of my favorite bands.. The Archers Of Loaf! My cousins old band, not popular in America outside of UNC but they definatly had fans in europe. Europe... Soooo much better then our country... Sorry ADD!

Anyways... Their first album "Icky Mettle." My favorite of the bunch, with "Web In Front" as the first song is amazing to some and well... Just odd to others, I guess you have to have a certain understanding of good music to like them (Or be related to the guitarist, possibly both).

Sadly they had to break up because of the guitarist and a few other reasons that I don't exactly know of.. The singer continued his musical career and now is a solo artist. My cousin Eric (the guitarist) has retired from the band and is now a lawyer (how ironic is that?).

If you are looking for great indie rock, look for the Archers!

Introductions

Hey Kitties,
its me!
<--- well, this isn't me, but this is the person who this post is introducing! This is my future co-blogger, Aidan (he shall remain last-name-less until a future date), who is gonna be doing a once-a-week-thing-y on here, cuz he's "interesting", aka, my friend with weird opinions and good taste in music!
soooo, hope you guys like him, ciao!

Moulin Rouge!

AH! my first review thats NOT a book! hahaha :) this is one of my favorite movies so I thought it was good one to start with!

What the DVD says: Venture behind the red velvert curtain and witness a spectacle beyond the imagination. Enter the fantastic world where nothing is forbidden and everything is possible--the world of Moulin Rouge!

What I say: Contrary to what the back of DVD says, everything seems to be forbidden in this movie! But that just makes it all the more wonderful! First off, they have some great actors, including Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor! But be warned if you fear musicals! The numbers are loud and fantasically performed....the whole plot is very straight forward, or it would be if there weren't so many different ways of looking at it! And the characters are simply fabulous, I love them so much! (dwarves and bohemians and playwriters, OH MY!)
This makes me cry every time, but its a fabulous movie, rent it next time you happen past the movie store, you'll not regret it!

Moulin

Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer!

Hey Darlings!

So, I've decided to put a book on here that I read a long, long time ago, but its reeeeally popular right now (what with Robert Pattinson portraying one of the main characters in it....guess what it is yet?)
ANYWAY! the book is a good romantic fantasy, drum roll please....TWILIGHT!

What the book says: About three things I was absolutely positive.
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him--I didn't know how dominate that part might be--that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

What I say: Well, darlings, this book was good. I must say, I dont like it as much as others in the series (ahem, Eclipse, New Moon....), but still, as far as this book goes, you wont be able to put it down! I re-read it, and found my self still as romanced with Edward as before, and still quite attached to Bella. She almost reminds me of me....clumsy...involved with vampires...no, just kidding about that last one! But if you like adventure and danger and romance and love and vendettas and craziness all rolled up into one little well-written package, look this book up.

The Outcasts Of 19 Schuyler Place by E.L. Konigsburg

What the book says: "I prefer not to..." That's Margaret Rose Kane's response to every activity she's asked to participate in at the summer camp to which she's been exiled while her parents are in Peru. So Margaret Rose is delighted when her beloved uncles rescue her from Camp Talequa, with its uptight camp director and cruel cabin mates and bring her to stay with them at their wonderful house at 19 Schuyler Place.
But Margaret Rose soon discovers that something is terribly wrong at 19 Schuyler Place. People in their newly gentrified neighborhood want to get rid of the three magnificent towers the uncles have spent forty-five years lovingly constructing of scrap metal and shards of glass and porcelain. Margaret Rose is out raged and determined to strike a blow for art, for history, and for individuality...and no one is more surprised than Margaret Rose at the Allies she finds for her mission.

What I say: I loved this book! It was such a sweet read, and E. L. Konigsburg's style of writing is so different and interesting. The way the main plot (saving the towers), interacts with the subplot of learning to trust people, figuring out relationships, and fighting for what you believe in was wonderful and beautiful. I'm sure you'll find all the characters very endearing, from Margaret Rose, with her love of the towers, art, and her uncles, to her young aspiring artist friend Jake, to the odd but sweet uncles themselves. I hope you guys love this book as much as I do.

Cover Note: I love, love, love this cover, just because its so sweet and simple, with the girl smiling while lying on the grass by herself, it makes me almost nostalgic, and the simplicity perfectly illustrates one of the underlying meanings of this book!

To start with....

Well, this is my first post, and I have no followers. Peachy!
Just in case I do eventually find followers (hahaha, the weirdness of that sentence), I'm just starting this cause I have a very strong opinion on a lot of things (books, movies, politics, people, friends, pets, stem cell research....ALOT OF THINGS), and my friends get sick of hearing it, so I decided, why not share it with people who dont just tune me out?
I'll probably write once a week and tell you (whoevers reading this) about anything interesting I've found....
Ciao darlings
Love,
M.
